Casey II.
Sunday Dec. 4th 9 am to 11 am: Kenjutsu Kihon: Extend your ki energy through a blade in order to make its movement a natural part of your expression of will. Our large, bright training hall allows you to fully explore the amplified dynamic movement of the sword. Featuring Rick Hansen. After the seminar, we will also take an informal dojo skiing trip, and we'd be happy to show off our local mountain for an afternoon of skiing. Skiing is not included in the seminar, but if you want to check out El Dora ski resort (www.eldora.com) with us, you're welcome along!

Hardee Hakutoshi Merritt groundfighting DVDs!
Thursday, June 22, 2006
Back by popular demand!
In February of this year, we had the pleasure of hosting Hardee Hakutoshi Merritt here at the Boulder Quest Center for a groundfighting seminar. Hakutoshi spent 6 hours with us sharing the fundamentals of his jutaijutsu program, and we produced 2 hours of video on 2 DVDs capturing his wisdom and skill. Complete with slow-motion and zoom-in shots helping you see the details of the techniques, these DVDs are a great way to build your familiarity with the core skills of groundfighting. For a free sample of the video, check out this 3 minute cut (bearing in mind that the video quality is substantially reduced for the Internet - it looks sharper on the DVDs)... When you're convinced that you need this addition to your training video library, call the Boulder Quest Center at 303-440-3647 or email at info@boulderquest.com. We'll ship the videos to you for $25 plus $5 shipping and handling. Orders will be shipped within 2-3 business days. Quantities limited so order now.

Cardio sword most creative workout of 2008!
Wednesday, June 25, 2008
Read the Daily Camera article
Mary Aitoshi Casey created the Cardio Sword program in late 2007 based on her long experience and research as a fitness instructor, martial arts instructor, and student of recreational theory. The Daily Camera ran an article on Cardio Sword in the spring of 2008, and workout-of-the-week reporter Aimee Heckel spoke highly of the novelty of the experience. When the Daily Camera chose their workouts of the year for 2008, Cardio Sword was chosen as the most creative - high praise considering Aimee does a new workout 52 times a year, always on the lookout for innovative and inspiring approaches to fitness. We are pleased to see Mary Aitoshi's personal contribution recognized by the greater community! Read the "most creative workout" Daily Camera article here. You can also read the original article run in January, along with video of Cardio Sword, here.

Reiki I : Sat. 1/10 : 3:00pm
Saturday, January 10, 2009
Learn the energetic healing techniques of Reiki.
Reiki is a form of energetic healing that has its roots in Japan. Many of us lead very active lifestyles which make an immediate method for dealing with injury invaluable. Keitoshi and Aitoshi are both Reiki Masters and present their Reiki lineage as a distillation of their studies in Western Reiki, old Japanese Reiki, massage and pressure-point activation, shamanism, and of course their primary specialities of To-Shin Do and Japanese vajrayana Buddhism. What results is a practical tool to support healing through self-care, mindfulness, and personal empowerment.
The course includes our 57 page Reiki I manual, with complete notes on our lineage history, techniques, and philosophy. Receive the manual when you register and pay for the course, and you can enjoy previewing the material, framing your questions, and orienting your mind ahead of time so that you get maximum value out of the 4 hour session.
Please register ahead of time at the front desk so we can gauge the size of the class and print manuals as needed.
Cost: General course price: $125 To-Shin Do students: $105 To-Shin Do Gold members: $50 Already Reiki I certified in another lineage: $50 Already Reiki I certified in our lineage: Please attend as our guest
Date: January 10, 2008
Time: 3:00pm - 7:00pm
We are also considering offering Reiki II over the course of two four-hour weekends, one on 1/24 and the other 2/7, from 3 pm to 7 pm. Please let us know if you would be able to attend.

Reiki IIA : Sat. 1/24 : 3-7 pm
Saturday, January 24, 2009
Deepen your Reiki practice
Reiki II is an extension of your Reiki practice. If you have studied Reiki with us before, have practiced Reiki at least 15 hours since you received Reiki I, and feel that you can comfortably focus the energy for several minutes at a time, then you are qualified to study Reiki II.
We'll refine our Reiki practice through the study of Reiki symbols, extended uses of intuition and scanning, and the Shinto Kotodama chants that underlie the symbols. This allows the practitioner to experiment with and tune the Reiki energy toward more specific needs, and also provides a more personalized Reiki practice. Time permitting, we will also explore the use of the Badkin method, an acupressure system that is highly compatible with Reiki and allows for some startling adjustments to misaligning muscles and tendons.
Because of the volume of material, the course is broken into two four-hour weekends. It includes our 43 page Reiki II manual, with complete notes on the methods, symbols, and sounds of our Reiki II offering. Receive the manual when you register and pay for the course, and you can enjoy previewing the material, framing your questions, and orienting your mind ahead of time so that you get maximum value out of the sessions.
Please register ahead of time at the front desk so we can gauge the size of the class and print manuals as needed.
Cost: General course price: $250 To-Shin Do students: $210 To-Shin Do Gold members: $50 Already Reiki II certified in another lineage: $50 Already Reiki II certified in our lineage: Please attend as our guest

"Performance under Pressure"
Stephen K. Hayes will visit the Boulder Quest Center on Sunday, April 5th, 12-4 pm, for a one-day experience exploring how a ninja keeps the mind focused under great pressure. Exercises include unarmed defense, sword clashes, and rescue-a-friend scenarios for viewing how the decision making process can be interrupted by stress and confusion. In addition to the active techniques, we will explore classical seated meditation as a means for identifying and solving the difficulties illuminated by our martial training. These "inner-workings" teachings are some of the most precious of the ninja lineage. Mark your calendar now and do whatever needs to be done... visits by the legendary founder of To-Shin Do are rare and precious.

Keitoshi hikes Longs Peak Aug 9 (Sun)
Sunday, August 09, 2009
Want to come along?
This is not an official dojo outing, but Keitoshi has wanted to summit Longs Peak for years and will do it on Sunday August 9. This is a very hard but legendary journey up the famous 14,259 feet peak, leaving Boulder about 1:30 am to complete the 7 mile one-way trip to the summit before afternoon thunderstorms.
Keitoshi's statement:
"I've always wanted to do this, and I'm happy to have any friends along who are up to it. Because it's such a major trip, I can't predict all the details, so we really go as a group of peers, each of us self-sufficient and making our individual decisions about how far up the mountain to go. I expect we would start and finish together, but along the way, we'll all have our own pace. If this sounds like fun, I'd love to have you along to share the memories!"
Keitoshi prepared some basic notes on what it takes to attempt the summit of Longs Peak. Though not comprehensive or professionally prepared, they can help you start your research. Then let us know at the front desk if you want to carpool up!

The BQC is proud to announce E3 to Empower, Educate, and Effect the lives of women around the globe.
All Day: We will be hosting Think Humanity's artisan sales. Think Humanity is changing lives of women by providing refugee girls with an education, rent, food and medication; therefore encouraging advancement, empowerment, confidence, self-reliance and roles in leadership positions. Through education it will change the cultures misconception that women are inferior to men. Our girls have been able to recognize their rights and freedoms within the African society and therefore eventually advancing women and ending gender bias and discrimination.
9am-9:55am: Yoga for Survivors. October is Domestic Violence Awareness month and whether or not it's happened to you, you've probably felt its effects. Hollie Hirst is offering a special class filled with poses to help you release your fear and embrace your power. She will also be collecting donations for the Safehouse so please support this important class.
4pm to 6pm: Protect Yourself :: Ladies Night. This free event is open to women interested in learning how to protect themselves in uncertain times. Scalable responses for real-world applicability in defeating larger attackers, de-escalating potential violence, and getting home safely. 3rd degree black belt Mary Casey teaches this powerful seminar drawing on her years as a rape and family violence crisis volunteer, her adventures in scary locations throughout the world, and her twelve years exploring the secret arts of the ninja. Invite your friends and make this the best girl's night out! No martial experience needed--just the desire to know more about protecting yourself and your loved ones.
"I have always wanted to host an event that is focused on improving the lives of women. I see this event as an extension of our current outreach and a chance to grow more community partnerships. I'm so inspired by the number of women who've been positivitely changed through their Boulder Quest experiences. This is only the beginning." -Mary Casey, President, Boulder Quest

Reconnect and Rediscover Ancient Skills Weds 4/14 7-9pm
$22 per person (Silver and Gold attend as our guest)
$12 per fire-making kit (required for all participants)
Fire making is an ancient skill associated with myths of rebirth, connection, and rising above the primordial sludge. This 2-hour seminar includes a fire-making kit, instruction on making a fire, and the ancestral wisdom of fire-making. This journey begins with the roots of fire-making and travels through time to build an appreciation of our modern gifts.
This seminar will be taught by Ian Sanderson. A member of the Mohawk Nation, Turtle Clan, Ian hails from the Six Nations of the Grand River Reserve. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Native Studies from Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario. Ian has been involved in Outdoor and Experiential Education for 15 years, working with various organizations including the Canadian Outward Bound Wilderness School, the Canadian Canoe Museum, the Santa Fe Mountain Center’s Native American Emergence Program, and the Denver Indian Center. Ian was an integral part of the SFMC's Community Mobilization Project, an Indigenous-based social change model, which incorporated everything from De-colonization to Tracking to Youth Organizing. At Boulder Quest, Ian is a brown-white belt and valued member of the Leadership Team as a Trainer.

Fundraiser for Tibetan earthquake : Fri. 4/23 6:30 pm
Friday, April 23, 2010
A talk on the meaning of Tibet to our lineage
Keitoshi will speak on how To-Shin Do is connected to the Tibetan culture, and how His Holiness the Dalai Lama has had a personal role in creating and sustaining the compassion energies that lead senior teachers to teach. Please come and hear this important information, whether or not you can contribute.
Talk starts at 6:30 pm, Friday May 23rd. Q&A afterward, followed by group social time and discussion.
A message from Keitoshi on this talk...
Just a few days ago, a massive earthquake struck Tibet and killed 1700 people, injuring perhaps 10,000 more and leaving them homeless in freezing temperatures.
Many of us are overwhelmed by the news, as we are frequently overwhelmed by disasters that happen all over the globe.
In this case, however, there is a bit more of a connection to the dojo. The Tibetan culture is one of the few cultures that safeguards ancient lore developed in India. This wisdom, recognized over 2000 years ago, was lost even to India itself, but it persevered in Tibet and Japan. We recognize it in To-Shin Do as the 5 elements. Although the idea of 5 elements in nature is culturally widespread, the psychological and spiritual depth of the understanding that allows us to live so freely and powerfully in the ninja lineage is very unusual.
On top of that, Tibetan people, and in particular His Holiness the Dalai Lama, have been very helpful in mentoring us. His Holiness has been a friend and mentor to our To-Shin Do founder Stephen K. Hayes for many years. He also delivered to me personally the single most powerful lesson on compassion I have ever encountered.
The earthquake struck the region of Tibet where His Holiness was born. Due to politics, he cannot even visit the site to assist the dying and grieving. However, he can ask for help from those able to give it, and he has done so. You can read his statement, and An-Shu Hayes' statement, here.
As it happens, Mary Aitoshi and I, along with a few Boulder Quest students, will be visiting His Holiness for teachings in Indiana in just a few weeks. An-Shu Hayes will also be there and will present His Holiness with a contribution for our collective To-Shin Do community. Mary and I will make a personal financial contribution to that fund, and we'd like to encourage anyone who is able to do so, in celebration of the great contributions of His Holiness and the Tibetan culture in general to our path today.
Whether or not you can contribute financially, come and hear the story of how Tibet has helped us and what I got from meeting His Holiness in 2007. I would like for you to be connected to this, by hearing it, asking questions, and contemplating the vast forces that bring you To-Shin Do today. And, if you can, enjoy the power of putting some of your resources into our dojo contribution, which will merge with the overall To-Shin Do contribution, which will be delivered directly to His Holiness by An-Shu Hayes in a few weeks.
Thank you.
Keitoshi

Climb Bear Peak and train with a bo staff!
Bojutsu on Bear Peak
Climb Bear Peak and learn to apply bojutsu fundamentals in a natural environment!
Training includes efficient movement in a natural environment, bojutsu fundamental postures and strikes, and meditation/mental conditioning for harmonizing with the wilderness. Learn how to enter a dangerous wilderness with intelligence, move and thrive within it, and refine your skills with nature as your teacher. Led and facilitated by Keitoshi.
Logistics:
Sunday May 23rd we'll meet at a secret location in Boulder at 7 am – returning to the car by 3 pm. Sign up at the front desk to get the secret meeting place!
Cost: $90 – Gold members attend as our guest
Gear needed:
Bo staff Adequate water for 8 hours in the wildernessSnacks and lunch Hiking gear for a strenuous climb
Considerations
We will ascend Bear Peak via the Fern Canyon Trail, which is rated as “Strenuous” and ascends 2700 vertical feet in just a couple of miles. It is a class 2 hike with class 3 scrambling to ascend the last push to the summit. You need to have sturdy shoes and be in good cardio condition. You need to be well-rested and in good spirits. Weather conditions can change dramatically, and the summit is a 2-hour walk from the nearest trailhead, so be physically and mentally prepared to walk for 2 hours in a rainstorm if need be. Due to other inherent hazards (wild animals, steep terrain, lightning, etc.), under 18 requires parent signature. Under 14 requires parent participation.
